Campaign To Legalise 11 Metre Sideband Radio in the U.K.
Ever since CB radio arrived on these shores in the mid seventies our government has had a paranoia about Single Sideband.
When our country saw fit to draw some extra revenue from radio enthusiasts by legalising CB Radio in 1981, they gave us FM a poor substitute for the crystal clear AM we were used to. There was no way they would give us the all important Sideband Channels.
There have been promises over the years that they would continue to run test on the viability of Sideband  radio's and there affects, with regards to interference, on TV, Radio, Paging systems, Model frequencies etc. But so far nothing has come of it.
Since then we have had the introduction of  40 extra channels, which ironically, where the same frequencies we had campaigned for in the years previous to legalisation, but once again on FM.
With the introduction of the latest technology in the construction of Televisions, Radio's, which are now far better protected against interference, and with the Digital Communications revolution the chances of interference are minimal to non-existent.
I personally hold an Amateur Radio Licence as well as CB. This gives me the right to transmit on Sideband using a power of up to 400 watts the government saw fit to make this a possible, then why not the same with CB, not exorbitant amounts of power, standard radio power, 12 watts will suffice, keep linears illegal, make it possible for us to talk to other radio enthusiasts over longer distances, on a clear frequency, a little DXing perhaps, but make it legal, and if there are any government officials reading these pages just think of the extra revenue that could be earned from the development and sales of these much improved multimode radios.( May be it could lower petrol prices).
In conclusion there is No Reason in this day and age, with the vast improvements in radio technology, for Sideband to remain Illegal, open up the airwaves once again, get 27 Mhz buzzing with enthusiastic breakers with a new dimension to their enjoyment of their hobby. CB radio is a great pastime for everyone so lets enjoy it with no restrictions.
